A company named Boxabl wants to bring down the cost of housing with a twist on the typical modular home. They’re making houses that are cheaper to ship because you unfold them once they’re on site.

Inside, there’s everything you need: a kitchen, living room, bedroom, and bathroom. Many of the fixtures and appliances come ready to go.

Boxabl believes folding homes are key to efficient transport. The typical modular home is fourteen feet wide and requires that familiar “wide load” sign and escort trucks while it travels down a highway. Boxabl is making their foldable home just eight feet wide, which requires no special assistance. This means the homes can be shipped anywhere for potentially less cost.

“I think the only way to solve housing is with solutions like this that are technology oriented. It’s really an issue of supply and demand. If there’s more supply price will go down,” concluded Tiramani.

3D printing has become the hottest new construction technology of the past few years, with houses being laid down in California, Texas, New York, Mexico, Canada, Italy, and Germany, to name just a few. There’s no doubt it’s an efficient, low-cost way to build durable homes, with the added bonus of a wow factor (which may soon expire given how fast the method seems to be proliferating).

But one company is taking a totally different route to affordable, easy-to-build housing: foldable homes.

If, like me, your first thought was “Foldable? That doesn’t sound like something I’d want to live in, or something anyone should live in, for that matter”—hear me out. The company producing the homes is called Boxabl, and they’re made of steel, concrete, and EPS foam (this stands for expanded polystyrene, and it’s used as insulation).

The houses were unveiled at the International Builders Show in Las Vegas, where Boxabl is based, in March. But they’ve recently started to get a lot more attention after a tweet by Elon Musk raised suspicions that he lives in one. There’s since been some confusion about whether Musk’s Boca Chica, Texas house is actually a Boxabl or a similar pre-fabricated home from a different builder, but either way, it’s been good publicity for Boxabl.

The kitchen and bathroom are on the same side of the house, with items like the refrigerator, toilet, and sinks already built in. This section stays upright throughout the shipping process. Upon arrival, the house just needs to be “unfolded.” It can be bolted to any foundation using connector plates.

Order one and a semi hauling the house along with a crane will drop it off and unfold the house in about a day with all of the components inside—from windows to kitchen cabinets. But you’ll need to prep the foundation first and plan to have utilities hook it up (unless you’re living off the grid).

Boxabl Casita ADU

Addendum Dwelling Units (ADUs) are another tiny house option. Perfect for someone who owns a regular house with a large yard and would like to share it with a family member or as a rental.

ADUs, often called granny units are legal in many places where a tiny house on wheels might not be allowed. More and more prefab ADUs are being developed these days and Boxable out of Las Vegas, Nevada recently introduced their concept which will be put into full production later this year.

Boxable is introducing the Casita as its first model. At 375 square feet, it is similar in size to a converted double-car garage.
