Things to Consider While Shopping Refrigerated Trailers for Sale
Refrigerated trucking is a little different than ordinary hauls. Here’s what we mean…
- Rear doors – You have two decisions, roll-up doors and hinged swing doors. Roll-up doors are easier to operate and quicker during loads and unloads, but this comes at the expense of letting more cold air escape, which stresses the refrigeration unit. You should always consider your cargo and the number of stops before deciding on a door style.
- Size – Smaller trailers cost less money upfront, but sometimes they can actually cost more to operate in the long run. As such, skimping out on the insulation and choosing a smaller trailer with a smaller reefer unit might not save as much as you’d think.
- Longevity – Refrigerated trailers can last a long time if they are well-maintained, but over time a moisture problem is almost inevitable. Therefore, the newer, the better.
- Reduce Fuel Costs – Most refrigerated trailers use a diesel reefer unit to keep cargo cold, but finding one with an electric standby unit allows you to greatly reduce diesel costs by using an electric motor that’s powered by a battery (Thermo King trailers are especially known for usually having this feature).
